FORMULA 1 QATAR AIRWAYS AUSTRALIAN GRAND PRIX 2026 - Melbourne

FIA @fia · 1h

1) McLaren bring a new rear wing to Melbourne. It features a revised mainplane and flap elements for improved load. The MCL40 also gets a revised floor edge for better flow control around the rear tyres and new rear suspension fairings for better flow around the rear impact structure and improved diffuser performance.

2) Mercedes come to Australia with new bodywork with greater downwashing that "pulls high energy flow to the rear of the car". A new front wing features increased camber for more load and no strake. A revised rear wing gets the same treatment, with more camber for greater load.

1) Red Bull Racing restrict themselves to simply saying the front and rear wings and the nose have been revised in accordance with the 2026 regulations and to provide more load in each area.

2) For its first 2026 front wing Ferrari says it has focused on "optimising balance range", while "integrating the new SM system'. It says the same of the three-element rear wing and the team also highlights the floor of the SF-26, where it has focused on "understanding how to extract maximum performance across the entire operating envelope".

1) Compared to its launch car, Williams' FW45 gets an updated floor with a new winglet/cutout ahead of the rear tyres to improve load. The geometry of the dive plane of the front wing endplates has been revised. A revised rear wing features new winglet and pillar extensions. Finally, there's a new circuit specific engine cover with smaller exit panels to suit Melbourne.

2) Racing Bulls bring a new floor to Melbourne. The keel, leading edge devices and rear have been revised for improved flow quality. The top deck of the engine cover has also changed to improve flow to the rear wing. The geometry of the rear winglets has also changed to provide more load.

1) Aston Martin's AMR26 features similar 2026 solutions to other teams' cars. Notably it features high sidepods inlets and sharply undercut sidepods. The top deck of the sidepod slopes to the rear of the car, with colling exits more centrally placed.

2) One of the notable features of Haas' VF-26 is the floor body, which it says "incorporates a substantial vertical vane to condition and manage tyre-wake structures". The vane is complemented by a series of horizontal aerofoils that promote localised load extraction.

1) Alpine come to Melbourne with a car it says has been designed "in accordance with 2026 regulations". In testing the A526 sported some novel solutions, particularly its rear wing, and those are likely to feature again at Albert Park.

2) Audi's first entry, the R26, comes to Melbourne with some intriguing solutions, most notably its sidepod design. It says the inlets feature "unique geometry, shaped to work closely with the floor and rear bodywork", while the sidepod body is "heavily downwash biased" and "possibly the most extreme on the grid".

3) F1's newest team comes to Melbourne with several updates to the MAC-26, including a new front wing with revised front flag design to enhance performance, new front endplates, which have been updated to boost the aero load of the front wing, and a new rear wing with revised flaps for "improved yaw characteristics".

Adrian Newey feels 'powerless' as Aston Martin left with two Honda batteries

Jamie Woodhouse 22 minutes ago

Adrian Newey confirmed that Aston Martin has just two working Honda batteries left at the Australian Grand Prix, having started with four.

Those batteries, Newey confirmed, are the ones bolted into the cars of Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll. Newey opened up on feeling "powerless" in the present situation, as analysis continues to discover whether Honda's trialled fix for its engine vibration issues has made a difference.

Alonso was forced to miss the entire FP1 session in Melbourne, while Stroll was restricted to just three laps, as Aston Martin and Honda's difficulties from testing spilled over into the F1 2026 season-opener.

"We're having continuing problems with the battery," Aston Martin team principal Adrian Newey confirmed.

"So we've had a fresh problem, if you like, that also communication internally with the battery to its management system.

"But the much more underlying problem, is the vibration issues that we continue to struggle with."

This vibration issue was deemed a primary factor behind Aston Martin's struggles in Bahrain.

But, Honda and Aston Martin had been working on solutions ahead of Melbourne. While admitting that the issue was still there, Newey was asked whether any progress has been made.

"So we tried a different solution in Lance's car today. There's some analysis going on as we speak as to whether that's helped or not, and then, depending on that analysis, we'll define what we do for FP2."

Newey said ahead of the race weekend that Alonso cannot do more than 25 laps without risking permanent nerve damage, due to the vibrations. For Stroll, it was 15.

With that in mind, Newey was asked what Aston Martin was hoping to achieve across the remainder of the Australian GP race weekend.

He opened up on an alarming battery situation, with Aston Martin down from four, to just two left.
