Gary Anderson compares rear wing designs

Just to give a comparison of rear wing concepts I have put some highlight lines on the rear wing leading edge (blue highlight) and trailing edge (red highlight) of the Red Bull design, then transposed that to both the Ferrari and the Mercedes.

The reference magenta lines are to allow me to position them as best possible - there is as little as possible scaling as the pictures are not exactly at the same angle or scale.

As you can see neither Ferrari nor Mercedes bother with this small centreline V cutout (yellow arrow). Red Bull, which uses a single-mount system, does it because the area behind the wing mount and DRS actuator means that the energy in the flow to that section of the flap is not as strong so it will separate on the undersurface earlier.

Ferrari tried a single-mount system earlier in the day but the rear flap failed so it had to go back to this version - but it has the central DRS mount so still the same problem. Mercedes does use a single-mount system but doesn't bother with this detail.

On the Ferrari the profile across the span is quite different (green arrows). It reduces the load nearer to the wing endplate and adds some load nearer the centre of the car, so a bit of 'takeaway with one hand, add with the other'.

Mercedes just adds with the increased section near to the endplate (green arrow) so in general it's running more rear wing downforce.

On the upper rear corner of the endplate (orange arrow) both Red Bull and Ferrari use this corner cutout to the maximum. They also put a radius on the upper corner - both of these are drag reductions without any downforce loss.

On the Mercedes that square corner is retained. It will look better in damp conditions as the vortices coming off this corner will be much more pronounced but unfortunately with that comes drag.

The bottom monocoque of the Red Bull  #RB19 is more rounded compared to the RB18. Apart from this, very similar front bulkhead.

Big news about the future of Alpha Tauri:

The new Red Bull management determined that the results and the marketing value doesn't justify the high costs. So the team either has to move to England or it could be sold.

There are 3 potential buyers interested to take over Alpha Tauri. Those are the same candidates that have officially applied for an F1 entry in 2025. Andretti, HitechGP and an Indian billionaire who owns the Mumbai Falcons Racing Team.

"Generally we don't comment on rumors. That we can't be satisfied with what Alpha Tauri achieved last year (P9) is also understandable. But such a decision is entirely up to the shareholders.

When you have a team that wins the title and the other one is only P9, the synergies don't seem to work properly. The overall result is not satisfying. As good business people, our shareholders will make the right decision."
