He's also steering while airborne, which all drivers do out of pure instinct.


Actually you can see this in the Lap 22 telemetry data. Alonso hits the brakes hard, but only achieves minimal deceleration because the front wheels are in the air. Then the car lands and he starts to slow down much more aggressively.

In Austin, Alfa Romeo modified the forward part of the floor in order to add downforce and improve the car's stability. The transition between the upper side and the outboard floor fence is more rounded (yellow arrows). Alpine did something similar in Belgium.
