Interesting interpretation of the wing auxiliary component rules by Mercedes for the #USGP.
Teams are allowed upto 8 brackets to keep the slots between the profiles constant. Merc now use the full 8 & legally exploit them for an aerodynamic.

The rules define the size and number to the slot gap brackets. Before these were half moon carbon pieces, with just 3 across the last slot gap & 3 on the first gap.
Additionally you're allow up to three crackers to allow the wing to pivot for adjustment.

Mercedes now have the full 8 slot gap brackets, using 5 on the last gap and having them shapes like fins

While still acting as the supports for the slot gap. They no doubt have an aero function. Probably by turning the airflow outwards around the front tyre, called outwash.
Their size, shape and aero function appear to be within the rules.

What is the purpose of those turbulators or vortex generators? they make more sense at the bottom, not at the top; perhaps the target is located further back. @AeroGandalf  @NaturalParadigm

I assume create some bulk outwash in the flow. Position seems driven by rules about slot separators but not sure how they've got so many.

COTA is planting 296 trees to honour Sebastian Vettel (number of race starts up to #USGP) – it will be called the Vettel Grove. First 20 being planted on COTA's campus, remainder will be in a grove nearby to help with floodplain restoration. #F1

I'm hearing Mercedes brought only one version of the new front wing to Austin. With the tyre test in FP2 there is not enough time in FP1 for a back-to-back comparison run. So the new wing probably won't be used at all this weekend.
